SVE for LabVIEW (Monday Meeting 3/31/08)

How can a LabVIEW based application interact with the SVE?

The SVE is a Python application that uses Pyro to communicate with the SVE client code used by the user application for publish and subscribe.
Instead of writing a Pyro interface for LabVIEW we decided to implement the SVE client code in the following way:
For PML we already developed two python scripts and modified two SML VIs (topml.vi and frompml.vi) that allow LabVIEW SML application to interact with the Python/Pyro world.

For LabVIEW SVE we can take advantage of this existing interface. All the SVE client code will be packaged in an SVE-device (device in the SML sense). To publish, subscribe, read and write the user code sends the appropriate command to this device. The SVE device then issues the appropriate call to the SVE process via the SML-to-PML link. For the SVE itself this look just like any other cal, i.e. the same as a call from a Python client.

Under LabVIEW/SML an application will make a standard SML call to publish or subscribe a variable. The syntax will look like this:

For example:
SVE publish Shutter_Status
or
SVE write Shutter_Status "closing"

During initialization the SVE device on the LabVIEW side creates a connection to the SVE and implements the functionality found in the standard Python SVE client.
